Matcha Latte Recipe
Matcha latte is also known as green tea latte; it is a refreshing and creamy tea made of matcha powder, milk and condensed milk. It is slightly sweet and has a smooth texture, with an earthy aroma. It is great tasting and can be served either cold or hot.
Matcha (green tea powder) is a common ingredient used in beverages, desserts and baking. You can use matcha powder for making matcha cookies, matcha ice cream and matcha pound cake.
Why This Recipe Works
Making matcha latte at home is easy, quick and affordable. The recipe takes 5 minutes to prepare and calls for five (5) simple ingredients.
Matcha Latte Ingredients
The recipe calls for simple ingredients listed below:
- Matcha powder
- Hot water
- Condensed milk – if you don’t have it, you may substitute it with sugar
- 2% reduced fat milk – you can also use whole milk, almond milk or oat milk
- Ice
How to Make Iced Matcha Latte
First, dissolve matcha powder with some hot water. Add both of them together in a small bowl and mix well with a bamboo whisk. Set aside.
Next, combine condensed milk and milk in a measuring cup (or a bowl). Mix well. (If you use sugar instead of condensed milk, you need to dissolve the sugar with matcha powder in hot water before adding the milk).
Finally, fill the glass with one cup of ice and combine both the milk mixture and matcha mixture in it, stir well and enjoy.
Cooking Tips
For the best result, please follow my tips below:
- Use a high-quality matcha powder for a rich tasting Matcha Latte. There are two main types of matcha powder in the market, ceremonial and culinary. Ceremonial is the premium matcha powder; it is dark green in color and tastes earthy and light. It is also more expensive. On the other hand, culinary matcha powder is bright green in color and tastes bitter. It is a cheaper and affordable ingredient for baking and beverages. Either one is fine for this recipe.
- Use hot water to dissolve the matcha powder completely so there are no lumps. Make sure the matcha powder is completely dissolved after whisking.
- To make hot matcha latte, replace the ice and use 1 1/2 cups of steamed milk instead.

Can you add chai instead of sweetner to make a chai green tea latte?
If subbing the condensed milk with sugar or sugar substitute, do I use 1 T? Also, can honey or agave be used instead? Thank you.
Yes, you can add either 1 or 2 tablespoons of sugar when making the drink, depending on how sweet you like.
Add honey or agave to matcha latter will change the taste. However, you can try it to see if you like that taste.
